Doha, the time is over

Doha hasn’t been a success. Connie Hedegaard has a contrary opinion on this issue, as she expose in her paper Why the Doha climate conference was a success (the Guardian 12/14/12), and her voice is much more authoritative that mine. But in my humble opinion, Doha and the before last conferences of climate, have not covered the minimum and the expectations.

She talks about the success in terms of a steep more on the path to achieve the goal. She shows a checklist of objectives and achievements; she laments the slow progress and she hopes that it can fulfill the 2015 agenda. I believe that conference has made advances but they are sufficient. Humans work bat the concept “Time”, this defect produces most of the errors that humanity makes and we have done historically. Like the tortoise and the hare of the story, climate doesn’t stop while we continue with our problems unrelated to the advancement of events. Yes we have made a steep but the climate change between our steeps make ten or twenty-five, and it’s continuing this average, it doesn’t matter how slow run climate because sooner or later it will hunt us.
More of these achievements were a ratification of previous commitments, as a Kyoto protocol. I never say that it’s not important but this protocol is still not ratified by some countries, obviously the main carbon makers; part of the signatories do not comply and who comply sometimes it make possible thanks to sel carbon quotes a countries that doesn’t emits; simply this is a hoax. I find that ridiculous sign implement the second phase of the Kyoto protocol when we have not achieved the objectives of the first, prove is the unstopped rising of CO2 concentration in atmosphere.
But Kyoto Protocol and other resolutions of conference aren’t the problem. Kyoto was signed in 2002 but ten years after the word isn’t the same. The climate reality change day by day, and the premises that was the basis of this protocol, today it have been surpassed. Are the objectives imposed by Protocol sufficient to address the climate situation? Probably not. Consequences predicted for the future in 2002, today they are beginning to be a reality; and all installments that we fixed have become obsolete. It’s true, nothing is worse; but what is it serving to heal a scratch when she/he is bleeding by a cut?
Deception occurs when in front to facts as melting North Pole, as the following study shows: A Reconciled Estimate of Ice-Sheet Mass Balance (Science 30 November 2012) and this summer we can see with our eyes, only they can arrived to compromise of minimum. Climate change put us in a limit situation but politics and economist think with economic problems because economy is now in a limit situation. Is it not true that the greatest economic losses have caused the climatic disasters in the last times? Of course the financial problems are son of greed, but the rising prices of agricultural products due to droughts, wildfires and floods that have been abundant this year. People who rule the World think that economy is the banks, transportation, energy and finances but they forget that people must be eat every day, and the very sad thing is that they forget it in front a succulent meal.
As time progressed the climate conferences are progressing less. Current discussions speak louder of past commitments than proposals for new challenges. But we would expect that when the conference was sponsored by a country that has more to lose with a drastic reduction of carbon emissions. There is fear of losing the status quo, and it doesn’t matter that all around are seeking if we can save our status. There aren’t worse blind who doesn’t want to see, today (12/14/12) IPCC confirms that global warming isn’t due to the Sun, thing that everybody more or less suspected, but tomorrow some skeptic will published a bizarre inform about how the Sun can overheat our planet or the lay of global warning for contrarest the news.
The time finish yet, and the advances of conferences are little compared with size of challenge. Everybody see the problem, but the fear at drastic changes that would lose same privileges of powerful people, impedes to make or think about necessary actions. The sad reality is that the next one will be worse if we don’t change the global aptitude.
